I did this trip about 10 years ago. It was fun but very crowded. A lot of americans.
My wife and I rented a jeep and drove the opposite side of the island from the resorts. Lots of jeep trails and good scenery. The town is safe as well.
It was a fun place to go but the resorts are very crowded. I also did a half day guided fishing trip which was very poorly run. The guides there are scams.
When I go on vacation, I mostly prefer staying on the resort, drinking and just relaxing. In that case, Punta Cana is a much better destination. But you do not want to leave the resort for the most part

goin to punta cana in jan. any advice on outside activities? day trips..fishing..etc? thanks.
