Things I loved about Up:
- the beginning sequence, obviously
- the concept of the talking dogs
- the relationship arc between the old guy and the boy

Things I liked about Up but did not love:
- the boy's character (atypical in a good way, but not totally realistic)
- the old guy's character (became flat and overly grumpy)

Things I did not like about Up:
- the villain was absurd, which weakened the second act.

The boy's character became annoying at times, I agree.
As for Carl becoming flat and grumpy, that's part of the grieving process. He just lost the love of his life so he's not particularly interested in the things going on around him and he doesn't want to be bothered. He just wants the love of his life back and he knows he'll never have her again. He's combatting depression and mourning while all of this is going on. So I actually like his attitude throughout the film. If you notice in the opening sequence and when he's a child, he couldn't be more happy. He has all that he needs and he loves life. All of that was tied in with Ellie and when she died, that part of him died with her.

Yeah I wasn't crazy about the villain either.
