Please note that no single statistic is going to be determinative because no offensive statistic can take into account things like turnovers that result in opponents scoring. That being said, yards per play is a measure of the effectiveness of each play, so doesn't the number of plays deserve scrutiny when looking at overall effectiveness of an offense?
Also, every play run must be viewed as an opportunity to score. Wouldn't you care to compare LSU's opportunities to score to its opponents and/or other teams? Without bothering to do any research, I would hazard to guess that winning teams tend to run more offensive plays than losing teams. So a positive margin in plays run might be a useful metric for "successful" teams.

I would guess that teams that run no huddle and quick paced offenses run more plays and are not necessarily more successful. More plays could also mean a terrible defense
Football Outsiders has a pretty good formula that tries to take it all into account. They have us ranked 5th in 2013 and 57th this year
You would also have a shorter field with a good defense

This year, here is the top 10 in plays per game:

59. Auburn
71. Ole Miss
72. Alabama

Only when you base your calculations on this preconceived notion.

Texas A&M is near the top of the country in plays per game. Would you call them a winning team?
