A .243 is a great round for some one learning the mechanics of shooting with more realistic recoil than a .22lr. It does possess the necessary energy to kill a whitetail inside it's designed range. Maybe I'm just not a stone cold killer who regardless of whether it is a doe or wall hanger, but I get some what of a feeling of nervousness and excitement when I know about to harvest an deer. (Could careless about a hog or coyote personally).

With all that said, I don't like them for an inexperienced hunter such as a kid. To me a 7mm-08 is a better gun for someone (like a kid) who isn't as experienced and nerves could come into play. If I shoot a big buck with a double lung shot using my .243 I feel less confident I'm going to find sufficient blood to trail the animal.
