Just picked this up, any general tips to make the experience more enjoyable? Or a link to a good resource. Never really played the other iterations.

Take your time and be patient. You'll probably die a lot but the enemies never change - it's about learning from mistakes (most of the time). Weapon upgrading is very important. Starting class doesn't matter too much, just depends on whether you want to use heavy or fast weapons (strength or dex).
