I trust her that she's not fricking this guy currently. I do feel like (in this new relationship) if he happened to become single that he'd be a threat to me. But A) that might never happen and B) my relationship will presumably strengthen in the meantime.

Its not about the girl or her annoying guy friend. It's totally you, dude. You're not ready for a relationship. Relationships aren't about figuring out the right angle to play. The right answer would be to talk to the girl about this guy. Just because she hangs out with that group doesn't mean you have to. At this stage, how many times have you had to be around him? Why aren't y'all doing things alone as a couple? You should end it now because you're not in the mindset for a real relationship.
