There's an intersection near my house where the traffic signs are screwed up in that no one has right-of-way. Visibility is great in all directions. People regularly ignore the stop signs. I haven't seen an accident there in 30 years.
A state trooper starts hanging out behind some bushes and begins writing tickets to errbody. Subsequently I notice several bullet holes in the sign. After somebody takes a shotgun to it, they replace the sign and the troopers keep writing tickets. Next thing I know, somebody runs over it with a coal truck. They replace the post and slap a new sign on it. Keep writing tickets.
And then the unthinkable happened. Somebody took a rattle can and spray painted a swastika on the sign. The local newspaper suggested this was the work of a smoldering hotbed of Nazi skinheads. One well-meaning soul took a can of paint thinner and tried to erase it, but wound up taking all the paint off down to the metal which actually made a bigger swastika.
They replace the sign. The cops quit hanging out there. The "Nazi skinhead" problem goes away. Still haven't seen any accidents.
As CLM would say, there is a want. In liberal groups, any sign of KKK/neo-Nazi activity triggers a collective orgasm.
