IIRC, the state sets the max towing fees at like $115-125. You pay less than that at LSU (IIRC somewhere around $60 for your basic tow). Riverside fees for being towed for less than a day are typically between $200 and $300. How does that work?
They have been caught CONSISTENTLY overcharging by LSP, towing cars that were properly parked, moving cars from good spots to bad ones, and then starting the video of the tow, staging cars, etc. This has been happening since I started LSU in 2002, and probably long before that. The fact is that they consistently break the law and get away with it. They are more than likely paying a bunch of people in the government off, or are directly related to someone important. There are way too many legitimate towing companies that do none of these illegal things to continue allowing Riverside to conduct business. What they do is illegal, and they do not get penalized for it.
frick, I went and took my truck back twice when they were staging cars at the Circle K on Brightside
Eta: I was also towed once out of Southgate Towers parking lot. Problem was that I lived there, and had a sticker. It took forever for them to give my truck back, and I had to get a ride to the place
Eta #2: I got towed from ECA once, and didn't have a problem with it at all. Sure I was unhappy, but I knew that I parked illegally, so I had no basis to be mad at anyone but myself. I walked up, paid, and got my truck back. Easy peasey

I do not know enough about the fees set for tows but assuming $125 is the max I believe the City of New Orleans is in violation as well. A friend of mine was towed for blocking a sidewalk and I remember her tow was about $230 (although that may have included the blocking sidewalk fine). Is Riverside allowed to collect fines on behalf of the City or it's customers?

I have no knowledge of this practice. If true, it makes me wonder how they are still in business. The reason they are still in business is because local business (including LSU apparently?) give them contracts to tow vehicles. The only way you will put them out of business is if they stop getting contracts. If I had to guess I would think that's why they are so aggressive. They want to keep those contracts.

I have no problem with them "Stalking" the parking lots they are contracted to "protect" from illegal parkers. It's pretty simple IMO. Do not park illegally.

Mistakes happen. Did you have to pay to get your truck? If so, I have a problem. If not, it sucks but mistakes happen (not that it makes it okay).

I agree you were parked illegally and I have no problem with you being towed.
