Actually their long model life cycles make them appear dated and thus less appealing.

Being a market leader doesn't mean it's a good design. GM and Toyota are both massive and a lot of their designs are bland as hell. The Corolla and Cruze are particularly blah and both are top sellers worldwide. The Camry is bland as hell, as is the Chevy Traverse (top selling large crossover).
Americans are too comfortable with bland cars so I don't popularity of the vehicle into consideration.
