So if I accidentally shoot a black bear cub thinking its a hog, which is pretty reasonable, I get the book thrown at me, but if I shoot a deer thinking its a person I get off free???

SHould be charged at the very bare assed minimum with negligent homicide. I would go with manslaughter if that meant a harder sentence.

I think the laws and penalties against killing black bears are there to deter someone from just using "oh, I thought it was a hog" as an excuse.

I don't think there are many cases of someone purposely killing a hunter and using "oh, i thought it was a deer" as an excuse.

No big deal humans aren't endangered so thier obviously not worth the life of s bear
