I think the ref called it because he pushed him after whistle, and throwing the flag on the guy who gets caught doing the shoving last is nothing new to football
Judgement call? Yes

Watch the replay from start to finish. During the live broadcast, I noted on at least four occasions there was pushing by Alabama players after the play had ended. And at least twice by Alabama's #20 on defense. No flags. No fouls.
