3 years ago at our lease they started cutting in May. Were supposed to be done and out by July. Well one thing led to another and it was the end of October before they finally finished. I was pissed but I tell ya. A week after they were gone, there were deer EVERYWHERE. I averaged seeing 15+ deer a day that season. Never had one like it before or after. But that season was awesome.
that said, give the hunter the option.

When they thinned the 1200 acres I used to hunt, the volume of deer didn't change. The patterns just changed a bit. The stands that you were guaranteed to see deer suddenly didn't have anything. Other stands picked up the slack. They cut every 3rd row of pines and it opened a lot of new shooting lanes. They finished right before rifle season if I remember correctly.

And as far as deer being scared off by all the noise. We consistently see deer right behind the camp and we are always shooting guns, tannerite, etc. They get over it in a matter of hours.
