I wonder, do most of these "country fans" even know who Hank is when he's being referenced to in all these songs? Has it gotten to the point where the idea/concept of him has outlasted his true legacy

The fans, no.
I get the feeling these singers probably know about Hank and started out playing real country. But the Nashville music machine is all about selling records, and they call the shots. So the prettiest boys get picked and most of these jokers sold their souls.
