Were they from earth? What is the conceivable explanation?
They are us, but in the future. So yes, they originated from Earth.
They evolved to the point where they can manipulate time and create wormholes and shite. They created the wormhole so present day humans could escape Earth and eventually evolve into 5th dimensional humans as well.

What is the suggested timeline of these people? Were they like pre-pre historic or something?

I'll say it, again. It is absolutely stupid to accept the premise that "They" have so much power that "they" can "manipulate time and create wormholes and shite", but - at the same time - "They" can't more effectively transmit meaningful, concise, accurate, and timely information about how "We" can get out the predicament that exists on Earth.
I don't care whether the wormhole was or was not closed at the end of the movie. The flaw of the movie - WHICH I NONETHESS ENJOYED AND RECOMMEND - is the ludicrous means by which "They" finally see that "We" are rescued.
