12 might work the best.
- All conference champions get in if they're ranked. (Which will rarely if ever happen with the MAC and Sunbelt champions, and at least one other mid major will fall short each year.) At larges fill out the field.
- Top four teams get a bye and a second round home game.
- Next four teams get a first round home game.

I think they all should get in. They deserve a chance.
But I know that's not popular.
Again I think we are finding a NC not the best team. To me that is the issue, as that's never been clearly defined.
