I would prefer an uneven number of teams like 6 or 10. That way there's a reward for the best teams (a bye week).
I wouldn't go any higher than 12. If you're 13th, you might be able to argue that you're one of the op 12 but you have no credible argument that you're the best.

Then do what the FCS does take 24
Top 8 get a bye it gives wild cards and all FBS teams a chance. Plus it gives credence to the top 25 poll the committee releases.
