Media bitched about split titles...fans bitched about bias...the BCS with it's strength of schedule component was born.

Suddenly, media bitched about the lack of a human element and programs in the #3 slot fell in and agreed with them. Gone was the BCS heavily loaded towards the computers and out came the version with more media input.

Media then began complaining that until we got a playoff we'd never really know. ESPN ginned up support. In 2011 SEC fans were told that the LSU-BAMA game was essentially a playoff game with the winner moving on. Then LSU won, and we were immediately told that OK State did not meet the eye ball test, that BAMA was obviously #2 and they got to lie in wait while LSU had to play UGA for the right at a rematch.

At some point, can we as fans admit that we've been played by ESPN? Media does not give two shits about the integrity of the game, the history, what its always meant to win the National Championship. They care about having yet another large scale tournament that will help generate buzz that they can then write stories about, sell ads in, etc.
can't upvote this enough

but as far as this goes:

I am NOT advocating this AT ALL...but the ONLY way to have a legit, unbiased playoff system would be to scrap polling altogether, set up a system similar to the NFL in which conferences act like divisions and teams have to win their way in. Anything short of a well defined mathematical system is simply Olympic figure skating judging in different clothes.
I'm gonna disagree.

Sometimes the top 2-8 teams might just be all in the same division. Why should we reward those who crushed their way through weak competition to get to the post season? I say we scrap the bias altogether and just move into straight computer polls. If you can't prove your system is completely free from bias (release the fricking formula Sagarin), it doesn't belong in any postseason determination. Then take a 6-8 team playoff from that and be done with it.

Like I said, I'm not advocating that...just that if we want to take any and all eye ball testing out of the equation, the only way to do it would be a system like the NFL. You win, you move on. You don't, you don't.

FWIW, I actually agree with the eyeball est to a certain degree and think it's what has made college football the best at REALLY getting their national champion correct most of the time. It's not about getting hot late and winning a tourney, it's about which team was the best ALL SEASON. It's the New England Patriots versus NY Giants argument. Those that support a playoff enjoy the fact that the Giants beat an undefeated Patriots team that had smoked the league all year. those that don;t like to see the team that was the best rewarded for that.
