NFL became a national sport in large part because it hold two big advantages over baseball
1) You can easily play fantasy sports with it
2) You can easily gamble on it.

because it uses television appropriately, and created a competitive league while the Yankees won 4 world series in a row. It's all about television, that's where the NFL wins and continues to win.
also, the NFL balanced marketing teams and players. Up until 2006, I thought they could do no wrong.

the baseball most of us care about in LA is played in Baton Rouge from February to June...

really is that simple imo
yes football would still be huge if it wasn't for fantasy but the stratospheric growth is all fantasy based otherwise it would still be a largely regional game save for a few big teams/players
