They win out, and they're a 12-1 conference champion. They have just as much, if not more, of a chance than a 12-1 Big Ten champion.
They are the defending champs. If they win their conference, even with a loss, the committee will give them high consideration.
Also, a good chance a few other conferences spit out some 2-loss champions. Would they go over a 1-loss champion who just happens to be the defending national champion?

It seems like the perception of the ACC is so low, they could be in a "must win" situation.
But I do agree with your statement. It just seems like they are in a must win due to a very bad schedule
