I believed meaning can be found in life, but it is all purely subjective. I am nihilistic in the sense that I don't believe there is any objective meaning or purpose behind our existence.
Well yeah, if God doesn't exist, then universal objectivity doesn't exist. That's basically the definition of God (any god). Moreover, in our tangible universe we very clearly do not have anything outside our subjective human experience, even the religious will acknowledge this.

But I think there are a lot of reasons to wonder if there's not some overall meaning to our existence as a species. Humans are special even within the scientific confines of evolution.

I don't lose sleep over it, though. I find plenty of meaning and happiness in life, despite the suspicion that in the grand scheme if things nothing I do in life has transcendent significance.
Great!

But wait I thought this was a scientific question. Why do you even mention whether or not you're okay with it? Especially when I've made very clear that I'm not religious.

As far as the answer to WHY?

"There is no reason" is as much a conclusion based on zero evidence as "Jesus is the reason."

The scientifically honest answer is "I don't know." And the scientifically curious approach is "I want to find out."
