What you clowns fail to realize is that if UK had simply picked the ball up they would have had the ball at the 45 yard line with 50 seconds left. I'd bet my house that they wouldn't have simply "ran out the clock" there.
While a squib kick minimizes the chance of a huge return, it gives the receiving team good field position. See Auburn squibbing to LSU in 2005.

This compares with the last 25 seconds of the 2010 Tennessee debacle. UK bailed LSU out of a bad decision.

Anything behind the UK 45 yd. line (which is where this ball ended up) would be considered "good". It's unrealistic to assume that UK would not have returned a regular kickoff to at least the 40 yd. line, AND the potential for an even longer return would've been in play. From an "odds" perspective, I thought the squib kick was a safer bet against a bigger return - it just happened to end up better than even planned.
