I read some interesting stories over the years about this disease and the Leper Colony that was in Carville, LA.
When it was closed, they moved the remaining residents to a special area set up at the Ochsner Hospital on O'Neal Lane. I don't know if any are still living. When sulfa drugs were developed, this pretty much put an end to the disease as being contagious. The remaining residents could have been placed anywhere, but they had lived at the colony for most of their lives so they wanted to remain in a protected environment that they were familiar with.
I think I remember reading that only about 10% of the population was even susceptible to getting Leprosy. And if diagnosed, being treated with sulfa drugs would arrest it without having to suffer the disfiguring results that early sufferers had to endure.
I an sure we have some OT medical folks that can add or correct this.
