How do you get a consistent hold with a scoped handgun?

Hit the swamp Friday night with my brother and a friend and caught about 30 nerf football sized frogs

KR,
Learning to use the scope is the trickiest part of handgun hunting w/ a scope. First, the scopes I use are designed to be used w/ handguns so they have a longer than usual eye relief. Second, the most difficult part is learning to position your eye(s) w/ the scope so that you have a full field of view. Obviously it's different from shooting a rifle in that you don't have a cheek piece on the stock to anchor your face to. It just takes a lot of practice to get lined up w/ the scope. If you're off just a tiny bit, the scope picture will "black out." Third, I almost never take a shot w/o some sort of rest. In this case, I rested the forend one a backpack propped up on the shooting window. On prairie dog hunts I use a bipod in front and a sand bag in the rear. All these things are part of the challenge that is handgun hunting.
