SEC Blog on ESPN.com posted an article in the morning links that explained everything.

While delay of game is the primary call, the ref also has the discretion to reset the clock. It worked out for the Tigers regardless, but it could have kept them from risking a bad exchange on the spike.

I've watched the replay a few times and I really think AJ did fumble the ball when he tried to spike the ball.

I cant see how the ref's can justify putting time back on the clock if there wasn't a penalty committed by UF.
