My wife has a blood pressure of 82/60 with a heart rate in the high 50's. She feels a lack of energy throughout the day and really her only activity is exercising and then she's in bed the rest of the day and is complaining about how tired she feels all day. Her blood pressure has gone down a little within the last few months. She's asked her doctor and he says there is nothing to worry about but she's always worried about it and now she's got me worried about it and she will go to see another doctor in a few weeks.

She's 47, 5'5" 105 lbs and swims everyday. She has always had an iron deficiency and takes iron pills for that.

I know OT is not the best place for questions like this but I've seen some doctors on here that seem to offer good advice. Just wondering if that kind of blood pressure is too low, as it just seems really low to me and internet searches about low blood pressure are all over the place in terms of what is acceptable.

Meh, shes probably fine. I assume the doc has run basic labs, particularly thyroid labs.

seems pretty damn low to me, but I do know a few women who have blood pressure in that range and their doctors also say nothing is wrong...I believe that an iron defeciency would cause the tiredness that you mention...

I suppose low blood pressure is a heck of a lot better than high blood pressure...

She sleeps about 6-7 hours a night and drinks a couple of cups of coffee a day.

Low BP AND low HR in an active person is usually a good thing.

Low BP and high HR is an issue.

Thyroid is mentioned. I don't assume she is on Anh meds?

I have suspected this and will do a thorough check in the morning.

If her BP and pulse is low and she's really athletic then it's usually nothing to worry about. But then people don't feel like shite, they feel great.

If she's not feeling 100% with those numbers then somethings probably wrong. She needs basic blood work especially CBC and thyroid function tests.

I don't know what Anh meds are, but after looking it up I suspect it's some kind of anti-depressant. No, she's not on any of that. After reviewing all of the responses so far I'm not as worried and I appreciate the feedback. I think she just may be a little worn out. It's been going on a few months however and we'll see at the next doctor's visit. I just wanted to make sure that that her blood pressure wasn't some freaky problem because it just seemed low to me.

I used to swim a lot...I was always tired as hell after. SO much more so than if I had just done any other workout..even if it was P90X or kickboxing for an hour.

swimming always had my blood pressure low too because it is so good for your body.

She should see her primary care physician when it's convenient- sometime within the next 2 weeks. Not emergently. Not even urgently. Conveniently. If she does not have one, she should establish care with one.

A word on blood pressures: This BP isn't necessarily low in someone who swims daily and doesn't show any symptoms (fatigue, light-headedness, general "blah" feeling). Although it's very possible that her BP is the reason she feels the way she does, there's likely a reason her BP is low, be it that she's not taking enough calories for the amount of exercise she's doing (swimming has a very high metabolic demand), common metabolic problem (like her thyroid is giving out, a condition easily treated with a once a day pill), an anemia (to which you allude), or something else. An isolated low blood pressure that makes someone feel bad is unusual, so there's probably a better answer. Unfortunately, that's where a conversation with a doctor who has cared for her in the past/will care for her in the future is going to supercede the opinion of the OT. There's so much to be gained by a simple conversation, in person, with someone that cannot be conveyed into words on a message board. She'll also very likely have a few little blood tests done, very basic stuff, presumably, and possibly/likely need to go back in a week or two to discuss the results/treatment options.

Good luck.

I have an overactive thyroid, and it goes the other way. My BP has been 170/120 and HR in the 130s. Sounds like she is Hypo.
