Well he had a lover. He wasn't celibate until later in his life and relationship, like many str8 people.

I realize that, it was still cool to read that.
What ever the reason was it's still cool he decided to do that. It sounds like it wasn't just medical because he was anti gay marriage. How many openly gay men or women are anti gay marriage, I've only meet a couple and that is because they work with a catholic apostolate who helps those who have homosexual tendencies.
Actually if you look up a movie called the desire of the everlasting hills it tells stories of Gays who went from being very tied up in the gay life style to living celibate.
