This is what keeps me from going insane about Miles. The coach has his faults, but I have seen many of big time schools botch a coaching search.

Probably a combination of everything. Not good recruiting area to begin with, rise of MSU, Hoke wasn't very good at keeping control of the team, too much attrition. I don't ever see Michigan or the B1G for that matter regaining its place, but they could definitely be doing better than they are right now and same goes for the B1G.
