from several accounts, it looks like michigan will be replacing their AD and head coach after the season. my question for michigan fans and/or B1G fans is: what the hell happened? during the hiring process, he was very highly though of. everyone thought it was a slam dunk hire. he takes rich rod's woeful players and goes 11-2 in his first year. but regressed every year since in a weak conference

was recruiting the problem? according to rivals, he has bagged classes ranked: 31 (with only 16 players), 5, 7, 21 from '14-'11, respectively.

was the hiring of assistant coaches the problem?

is it just to hard to win big at michigan b/c of lack of recruiting grounds and academic standards?

or was brady hoke completely over rated and in over his head coaching at a national power?

i'm just kinda fascinated how it all came off the rails in what feels like quick fashion. one year he was restoring the luster of the bo schembechler days, now hes an incompetent buffoon who doesnt look like the part. where did it all go so wrong?

He is a very likeable buffoon who was not qualified for the job. But, they wanted something that was the opposite of Rich Rod and went back to someone with ties to the old days and a controllable figurehead. Mattison is a good D coordinator, no problems there. The offense is a shitshow in part because it is still relying a guy who was recruited for a spread. And Rich Rod's playmakers like Gallon, Hemingway, and Denard are gone. That first year was fool's gold with an exceedingly easy schedule. Rich Rod would have posted a 9-3 at least, IMO. If the school had given Rich Rod the opportunity to change D coordinators again, the program would be in better shape today, although probably not for the long haul.

Hoke is a career .500 coach. He had one good year at Ball State, jumped to SDSU for a year and then took the Michigan job.

I don't know about this. He had a pretty small sample size from what I remember. I don't follow the B1G as closely as some in this thread but I certainly don't remember people going nuts over the hire and predicting Michigan to be back immediately
