Bruce studied freestyle wrestling extensively actually.
In fact, his Kung fu studies were relatively short in conparison when he started thinking about JKD. The basis for his martial art was a lot of boxing and wrestling. He thought of Mma long before many people did, and he had the same approach as what people have today. That is streamlining what works.
He felt western boxing and wrestling combined with catch wrestling, judo, and the various kicking arts was practical

I knew he was into western boxing, but never heard much about his wrestling or judo. Also, the kicks that I've seen him throw in competition (the few that I've seen) look like he's hitting w/ his foot, not his shin.
I have never heard of him competing in any kind of grappling tournament.
ETA; No doubt he was ahead of his time. I was just commenting on his chances against today's MMA pros.
