A division commander's primary responsibility is to command the division. How will that be achieved if the commander has to devote his time to whatever the mission is in Iraq? How can the CG be accountable for shite that happens in CONUS if he isn't around to supervise the elements of his command? Which staff officers go with the HQ? I would imagine the G-3 would have to go, but what other staff would be essential?

Bottom line, this can only be a precursor to deploying parts, or all, of the division to Iraq.

The Army is modular, based on the BCT. I deployed to Iraq with 3rd BDE/82nd ABD but my division HQ was 1st Cavalry Div. The norm has been the Div HQ takes its aviation brigade and maybe one infantry brigade but maybe not.

It allows flexibility depending on what you need, heavy, light, mechanized etc.

BCT's are practically independent entities at this point and have more or less been since 2003. Not sure how much "command" a division command center has.

The BCT's are answering to FORSCOM at this point, not their division commanders.
