I think people who argue ANYTHING on earth with "in my day..." are fricking retarded and their opinion is invalidated immediately. Because something has happened before does not make it right. Lots of people did lots of shitty things as parents. Hell, lots of people did shitty things in all aspects of life.
"I turned out fine" -- People who have been abused, raped, molested, starved, etc. have turned out fine. That is not an indicator of whether something is the right decision.
I haven't kept up with this story. I have no idea what the basis for this is. If he just popped his kid on the arm or something, it's not that big of a deal to me. If he left marks on his toddler, it's a bigger deal.
I don't even have kids and I know that 4 years old is insanely young. They haven't even gone to kindergarten at that age.
I was spanked on the rare occasion that I got in big trouble. And I remember being terrified for Dad to get home. And never once in my life did I have bruises, scratches, scars, marks, etc. from it. You shouldn't need to leave marks on your kid to scare them.

Check page 2 or 3 for pictures.
Keep in mind, these are from 4-5 days later, and they are pictures of the FRONT of his thighs. He was also struck in the scrotum and has defensive wounds on his hands. Peterson struck his child 10-15 times by his own admission.
Do you know how hard you have to hit someone with a switch for the end of it to come around and hit you in the nuts? Now consider hitting a 4 year old that hard 10-15 times.
On no planet, at no time in history, should this abuse be accepted. It isn't discipline. It is disgusting.
Wow. Thank you for this post.
