Nope...

""....the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion" Treaty with Tripoli, unanimously approved by the US Senate, June 17 1797"

Short answer: No.

Long answer: The Founders believed in natural law. When you go back and read the Declaration, it says things like "to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitled them," and "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights," that shows the Founders' mindset.

They believed that human beings had rights given to them by God, regardless of whatever form God took, and that the government should be structured to allow people to exercise those rights.

Many of the Founders also believed that we need a moral people and that religious adherence was fundamental to that. It was Adams who said that "our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people," and my impression is that most of the other Founders agreed.

However, it's very clear in the Constitution that this is not an officially "Christian nation," although in a lot of states at the time of the founding there were laws against "blaspheming the Christian faith." And yes, a lot of the Founders were Deists, although we shouldn't confuse that to be non-religious. For example, I'm looking in a John Adams biography where Jefferson wrote to Adams on slavery that "indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep forever." (although he was obviously a hypocrite.)

Most of the country was Christian but you did have an intellectual class that like today's intellectual class, was not-so-Christian, although like Jefferson they certainly believed in a God."

Even if it wasn't, it was founded by people with traditions and work ethic. We no longer have either.

frick the Christian vs atheist dichotomy. Modern Americans are shite weak-minded useless consumers for the most part.

Totally not true. This is simply a false statement that is being "preached" to combat Christianity. It's a relatively new tactic and has been a great tool for the anti-christian movement.

Without a doubt it was.

There is no separation of church and state. The founding fathers did not want a church of the united states (Church of England).

Was having an interesting conversation about this with someone on Facebook. I tried to explain to her that most of the founding fathers were Deists and not Christians. She obviously did not believe me even after I provided quotes from several of the founding fathers. What are your thoughts on this?

I feel like everyone is this thread is using a different definition of what is a "Christian Nation".

1) What is a Christian Nation for the purpose of this Thread

2) What are "Christian Principles"?

The Bible itself seems to work against arguments that this nation was founded on christian base. The bible supersedes anything else as far as Christianity goes.

Thomas Aquinas base his views of natural law from Greek philosophers before him and not the bible. He was merely a Philosopher who just happened to be christian in regards to natural law.

Questions:

Can you be a Christian in name only? Or must your actions match what you claim?

Is rape, murder, stealing, oppression, etc principles of Christianity?

If so, then yes. Those upstanding gentlemen "founded" this uninhabited land with Jesus Christ squarely on their minds.

One of the biggest myths that the athetiest have perpretrated on the American masses is that the FFs were 'deist's'.

Nothing is farther from the truth. A huge huge majority of the FFs were church going members.

They have succesfully propagandized the American people into thinking that based on the quotes of a few of the FFs.

Did the FFs want an offical Christian 'religion' for the US goverment? Absolutely not. They had seen the evils of a state sponsored church via the 'The Church of England' and others.
They wanted to make sure that one religous view was not forced on the American people.

BUT we know that the FFs were heavily Christian men and their beliefs were factored into the founding of our nation.

those who first came here were mostly puritans a Christian group of people. So no matter how Christian those early laws are, there is still a heavy Christian population in this country early on.

Maybe most of the founders were not Christians, oh well, for large parts of this country at it's founding there were many Christians.

At some point God was put on our money, in our courts, in our pledge, etc.

SO yes, I believe it was founded on following faith in God.

Why should I believe something that is so obviously and demonstrably not true? What's your reason for reviving this worn out topic?
