This should be a national story.

Man, the UL(L) vs LSU debate is so tiresome to me. I have friends on both sides of this one -- graduates of both, fans of both, etc.
My bottom line? We may not be on the same team, but we're playing for the same goal: Louisiana pride.
I'd personally love to have to two powerhouse football programs in the state, and having lived in both BR and Laffy, I'd much rather see LSU start up an in-state rivalry with UL(L) than try to switch our rival every few years.
I get the marketing decision behind "Louisiana" for athletics, and I understand why supporters of the state's flagship institution, as well as other UL System entities, dislike that branding. I don't, however, think there's any real shot of the UL(L) "Louisiana" brand in athletics being confused with or surpassing LSU's national image.
Now, I do think it's fair to anecdotally say UL(L) fans hold more widespread grudges against LSU. I was raised in BR and went to LSU and then worked and lived in Laffy for two years. There's plenty of LSU and UL(L) fans in Acadiana, but I often heard the anti-LSU mindset, admittedly in a good-spirited manner though. Perhaps more importantly though, Laffy natives share a common thread with NOLA natives that I don't see coming strongly from people native to other Louisiana cities: an immense sense of not only state but also city pride.
Again anecdotally, BR residents love to rag on the place. Laffy residents and N.O. residents seem to tout their cities.
All things considered, BR is on a major 10 year upswing, imho, but a lot of the arts/culture/quality of life things improving BR are already readily available in Laffy, imho.
