We all know there is a difference between "funerals" in a rented space with expensive flowers, structured reading and other expensive BS (which is what I think/hope the OP is referring to) and the act of getting together to memorialize and remember the departed? Right?

Engaging in the industry of funerals is absolutely not required. Those are some blood sucking frickers. And I agree with the OP if that is to what he is referring.

But if he is saying you shouldn't have some type of get together, well then he is a nut case.

FWIW, our last family member that passed was cremated and then we had a ginormous wake/party with family and friends. Cost half of what four hours at Rabenhorst would have cost and was better for everyone. Funeral home salesman was royally pissed when I wouldn't buy anything. I kept saying, cremate her and put her in a box. That is all I want. Your cheapest box. But, but Sir we have these packages and special services. Nope.
