Muhammed besieged and sacked Mecca with a force of 10,000 men after the city fathers kicked him out. Islam expanded exponentially in its first hundred years through war and conquest. Not through peace and love.
The followers of ISIS/ISIL and any other "radical" Islamic group are not the extremists. They are simply continuing what Muhammed started when he founded Islam in the 7th Century.
