quote:Hey, we agree! There are other factors in addition to genetics.
I doubt all gay people are born gay and I don't care. It's not really my business.

They want to commit to a person they love. Why is that such a big problem for you?
Since we both agree that there are other factors besides genetics, and we can both understand that human sexuality is far more dynamic than our current constructs of gay and straight, does it not stand to reason that legitimization of homosexuality could lead to an increase in homosexuality? Can you agree this far? Now, is having more homosexuality good, bad, or neutral for society? I don't fully know. Rational arguments can be made every way.

Actually Id be more inclined to believe the opposite. People drawn to a taboo lifestyle would not be drawn to it if it were no longer taboo.
Is there a "yeah social engineering" emoticon?

Especially in the steam room at the Y...why do you need to tie your shoes in the steam room? Who wears laceable shoes in the steam room?!?!

If everything goes to shite because of gay marriage you can blame it all on me.

I'm glad you allowed me to deconstruct your views. Most people disappear at a certain point on here. I too think everything's probably going to be okay. My main focus in these discussions is the bullshite coming from both sides. Neither side has any scientific merit, and are both obsessed with denying things we now know about human nature. "Some people are born gay" is equally as retarded as "God hates figs."

When things get to complicated and mired in detail I tend to revert back to what is easiest and most logical. In this case it's, adult people want to commit to one another just like I have done. Regardless of my personal feeling about homosexuality, Why is that a problem for me? Its not, so I couldn't rationally be against it.
When the choice is more freedom or less freedom I generally side with "more freedom".

In that vein, I would agree to a system where we clearly codified marriage as "two and only two consenting adults." As long as we came to some cultural understanding that homosexuality is a human behavior like any other, that genetics are not the end-all be-all. Because if we believe the unscientific lie that it's purely genetic, we can justify any behavior. The highly lambasted slippery slope argument is real.

But that slope cuts two ways and you are only choosing to recognize one of them. If we can tell someone that being gay is wrong "for the good of society" than we can make that claim about lots of unpopular behaviors. To me that is a much longer and slippier slope than is the jackleg wanting to marry his ferret.

quote:Ok. Fair point. Our attitudes should be neutral. As long as they're not hurting anyone, our overall attitude should be neutral, and tolerant of minority positive or negative viewpoints. Fair?

quote:Of course it did. But you have failed to show it is any way similar to what we have. And you have some evidence of your position since you have reused to provide any evidence.
Marriage existed before "Moses" and the Jews started to regulate it. You are actually the Old Testament Biblical ones, attempting to change an already established cultural institution through laws and power. Your examples of marriage being dynamic, yet universal prove my point. Marriage should be what the people want, not what the powers-that-be dictate.
If it is about what the people wat then you should have no objection to gay marriage. They want it. Who should deny them? The only reason to deny them is those codified laws that you dey.
Still waiting on those artifacts. Any timeline as to when you will be illuminating us.
