horse racing is still popular as it was as long as there are decent horses running. There were over 150k people at this year's kentucky derby. It never was the country's past time or anything.

Boxing. In the 50s people that had TV watched 'The Friday Night Fights.' People who did not have TV gathered around the radio to listen to the matches.
At least a dozen boys in my HS senior class were competitive boxers. Several went professional at a low level. LSU had a boxing team.
