AT&T screwed me when they started this program. My wife and I are not on contracts; I have a nexus and she is eligible for an upgrade. However, if I buy her a new phone on contract pricing, I have to pay the contract price PLUS they will raise the cost of my monthly plan $25 (this isn't the next plan). So over two years, the S5 was going to cost me $800 plus tax. B/c of this, they tried to sell me on the Next plan which would be a few dollars less, but I think I'd still end up paying $600 for the phone.

Sorry AT&T. I'm not going to pay full price or more for your phones filled with bloatware.

tl;dr - AT&T will raise the price of my plan if get a phone through them and don't use the next plan.
