I got points off on lots of assignments for not doing a problem the way I was taught in a class. That's been standard in education for a lot longer than the common core in my experience.

I did too. If I were a math teacher, I would ask a student to show me their work. IT is possible that they may figure it out not doing the common way, if they got the correct answer and showed me how they did it, I would either give them full credit or take off a point or two. I would also make my tests to where if you do it the typical way you would get it done in time, if not you wouldn't have time to complete it.
