I don't have a fence around my pool. I have one around my yard, but not around the pool. But then again we have dead bolts on all exterior doors that requires a key from either side. We keep all doors locked at all times. Both of my gates are locked at all times. Also, I pay attention to where my kids are regardless of who's house I am at. They also make alarms/chimes for when the door is opened. My alarm system actually talks and tells you which door or window has been opened.
Thats good and most likely it will always be sufficient since you are an attentive parent BUT it still leaves a small chance that something could happen. Living in AZ where it seems like this happens daily in the summer may make me overly cautious but I really hate hearing about avoidable deaths involving kids.

Our back door has a pull handle and if the deadbolt isn't locked, my almost 2 year old can easily get out. This is the exact reason we don't have a pool.
On one occasion, when my daughter was small, she got out and had probably been out a few minutes. I thought she was playing quietly in her playroom.
My son has gotten out twice, but not for very long. We now always keep the deadbolt locked and added a bell to the back door.

our alarm system is set on "chime" so anytime any door is opened, doesnt matter if its front, side, back, upstairs balcony, it chimes twice so we know if someone is entering or exiting the house.

That's what ours is on. The front and side have a normal chime, the back door has a noise like the A-Bomb is about to drop, lol.
