In my opinion the XL is better and here is why:
Primo is oval thus giving you straight edges which lends itself to more efficient use of space IMHO. It also has a larger cooking area. Also because it is oval you can actually split the firebox in half and only use one side for smaller cooks. The split firebox also allows true indirect cooking which cannot be done on an egg that I am aware of. For indirect cooks on the egg you must use deflector plates that basically just deflect the heat that is directly under the meat around and over. I also think these deflector plates are extras that must be bought. With that said, if you wanted to use the whole fire box on a primo to smoke you would also have to use deflector plates that are extra. However, I have owned my Primo for a while and have yet to use the enire firebox.
