Yep. The only synonym for automatic weapon that I can think of is machine gun. If someone quibbled over using those two phrases interchangeably, I would accuse them of parsing.

For the purposes of this discussion, I'd agree with you. However, with a small arms specific discussion, there is a significant distinction - but the NFA and other federal firearms legislation use them interchangably (and this causes a slight problem when we deviate from that context).

Would you accuse someone differentiating between an SUV and a semi of parsing?

Are these the same?
