When they got out of the car he had his hand in his pocket, they drew their weapons (correct move) they then can not call time out and put their guns away to then grab their tasers just because he took his hands out of his pocket.
If he has a knife and lunges he is going to die. If he had the knife out when they arrived then they have to decide if they are going taser or gun at that point but since he had his hands in his pocket gun is what they go with.

Exactly.
Trust me I am not a fan of the police at all but I don't see what other options they had. Perhaps just let the guy attack them?
