An old friend did just that and has been living in the Caribbean for many years now. I used to be very jealous of him but I must admit as life goes by and we get older, I'm less and less so. I complain about life sometimes but at least it's a life of substance. I guess I've come to view his life as fantasy or permanently avoiding reality. It's actually helped me come to peace with my life.

It's cool when you're younger but it'd be odd (to me) to be 40ish and single, no kids, no long term job, etc. Each his own though.

So many 's for this post. What does a "life of substance" even mean? That's such a subjective phrase.

The fact that you called his life a "fantasy" is laughable, because obviously he is doing it, therefore it's not a fantasy. It may be a fantasy for you, but it's his reality.

And nobody said you have to be single and have no kids to live such a life.
