At first, I was having a hard time squaring his statement, but then I noticed something. He reads the statement, seemingly without fear, almost confident. Then it cuts to the next part and he is noticeably more fearful. I wouldn't be surprised if he was told they would free him if he read it, and the second part is after he realizes that he's about to die.

You don't know how many times he was made to read something and nothing actually happened. It's like training a dog to sit.
