Automatic versus semi-automatic? Doesn't really matter. The question would be better phased as large caliber weapons versus a handgun.

That being said, the LA Bank robbers had automatic weapons. The crazies in Waco had automatic weapons. Several militia types have had shootouts with police using automatic weapons. So it does happen. But not very often, if ever, in the hood. More the crazy white boys that sling machine guns around.

The type of weapons are not necessarily the problem, it is the mindset created by adopting military type garb and vehicles and tactics. It promotes thinking that anyone not in uniform is the enemy, if you pay attention to the lingo used be a lot of these "tactical squads" you would think they were hunting insurgents in Iraq.

Their standoff was with the Feds, namely the ATF, not local police.
