Yep my family went thru this. My dad left his family to go to California to find work because there was nothing in Louisiana in the oil industry. Lot of families suffered thru those times.

My wife's family owns some banks and they said in the 80s people with mortgages would leave the house key in the banks mailbox and leave town.
