This made me wonder how many years now that they have been airing It's a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve?

I'm not comparing the two at all, but that part of your post peaked my curiosity in this regard.

It's A Wonderful Life went into a sort of public domain in 1974 (TV stations were supposed to pay the owner of the original story, who still had some rights to the movie, but I doubt anyone did). In the early 90's the movie studio was able to regain their rights and sold all viewing rights to NBC in 1994. So for about 20 years, TV stations around the US ran the shite out of the movie. That's why we all discovered it in the 70's.
