JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Nathan Smith dispatched Brandon McIver, 4 and 3, to move on in the 114h U.S. Amateur at Atlanta Athletic Club on Thursday morning.
The victory is only the second time that Smith has progressed beyond the Round of 32 in his 14 appearances in the U.S. Amateur and sets up his Round-of-16 match with San Diego's Byron Meth, a 5-and-4 winner over Trevor Phillips.
This is the first time that Smith has made the Round of 16 since 2000 at Baltusrol.
Smith, 36, of Pittsburgh, never turned professional. In a field with an average age younger than 22, he stands out as a veteran in a young man’s game.

Smith is no average "financial advisor." He's a 4 time US MidAm champ, a former Walker Cup player, and has played in the Masters 4 times. Still, good for him for competing with all of these young guns.

He may not be a PGA professional golfer, but the dude is payed to play golf.

For the past 2½ years, Smith has been an integral part of Executive Wealth Counselors in Pittsburgh. And while his arrangement with that firm is somewhat unique, it’s certainly not one that has given him an unrestricted free ride.
“Because of Nathan’s personality, his thoughtfulness, his acerbic humor, he is what we refer to as a relationship manager and that’s something you can’t put a dollar figure on,” said Fred Gustave, a partner at Executive Wealth Counselors and one of Smith’s good friends. “Bottom line is he’s a great golfer, but he’s even a better person.”

Never trust a financial person that is a good golfer

Yeah, I could tell after reading the article that he was more than just an average joe who tried to to make the US Am. But I still wanted to post the sucker headline.

Put him in the category of trip kuehne.

. It's still impressive. While he plays a shite load of golf, he still doesn't practice and play as much as college kids. I've played some tournaments with him. He can play no doubt.

If he's that good as a part timer, seems kind of weird that he never went balls to the wall to see if things would shake out for him.
Or am I not appreciating the gap between his level and that which would be necessary to make a career out of this?

The second one . It's similar to Tim Tebow. One of the great college QBs of all time; can't even make a roster in the NFL. Poor example, but you get the point.

You must be a pretty accomplished player yourself. What tourneys have you played with him?

I play in local qualifiers, Tri-State PGA events, and miscellaneous tournaments that he's been in. My index is low, but I'm certainly not accomplished . The difference between me and accomplished is a reliable short game.

I imagine he makes a pretty good living. Some people just don't wanna have to grind to make it to the tour.
If I could make a good living besides playing golf, and still be able to compete at a national amateur tournament level, I wouldn't complain at all.

Preach it, brother. He's played in 4 Masters. That would be good enough for me. All the benefit, none of the responsibility.

I don't do business with firms/ companies that have arrangement like that for really good golfers......
....not because of principle / ethics/ etc........
.....cause I am jealous it is not me as their employee that can shoot in the red on any given day.
