What's a decent time for 5 miles? Is anything under 40 minutes acceptable?

An average, middle of the pack triathlete would swim one mile in 25-30 min. Run 5 miles in 35-40 and ride 25 miles in 1:05-1:10.
Anybody could learn to swim 1mi in an hour in a week or two
Most anybody could run 5 mi in an hour. That's a glorified walk. Very few people who spend years training can make the 25 mi in an hour. That's cat2 cycling speed.

A decent 5 mile for the average Joe is about a 9 minute mile pace, or 45 minutes.
